Visualizing Your Skillset: The Menu Model

Communicating your skill level as a developer can be challenging, especially when the needs of roles are increasingly diverse.

To address this, I propose the “Menu Model”: a fresh way to visualize skills using a menu-like layout.

Each skill is represented as a “plate” sized according to proficiency, helping applicants and recruiters quickly understand specialization, generalist abilities, or “T-shaped” skills.

How the Menu Model Works

Imagine your skills as plates on a table in front of you. Each plate represents a skill, and its size corresponds to your expertise level. No plates overlap.

A large plate could highlight key strengths, like PHP or JavaScript, while smaller plates represent secondary skills such as API integrations or basic database management.

This setup also leverages screen size – keeping it around a standard 16:9 format – to limit space, underscoring that no developer can be an expert in everything.

For example:

  • Specialists might have a couple of large plates (signifying deep knowledge in specific areas), alongside a few smaller ones for complementary skills.
  • T-shaped profiles can showcase a balanced combination: broad skills with deep expertise in one or two.

Benefits for Recruiters and Applicants

  • Enhanced Clarity: It allows applicants to visually highlight core skills and emphasize fit for specific roles.
  • Efficiency: Recruiters get a visual summary of where a candidate’s strengths align with job requirements, making screening faster.
  • Adaptability: This model fits various screen sizes and works for any role, from front-end to full-stack development.

Practical Applications

The Menu Model can be tailored to different positions.

For example, a front-end developer’s “menu” might feature larger plates for JavaScript and CSS, while smaller plates might represent design and version control tools.

For full-stack developers, the plates could reflect both front-end and back-end skills, sized to reflect areas of emphasis.

Recap

The Menu Model offers a creative and intuitive approach to skill representation, transforming the assessment process for both applicants and hiring managers.

By framing skills in a layout everyone understands, it bridges the gap between candidate profiles and role requirements.
