Visualizing Your Skillset: The Menu Model

Communicating your skill level as a developer can be challenging, especially when the needs of roles are increasingly diverse.

To address this, I propose the “Menu Model”: a fresh way to visualize skills using a menu-like layout.

Each skill is represented as a “plate” sized according to proficiency, helping applicants and recruiters quickly understand specialization, generalist abilities, or “T-shaped” skills.

How the Menu Model Works

Imagine your skills as plates on a table in front of you. Each plate represents a skill, and its size corresponds to your expertise level. No plates overlap.

A large plate could highlight key strengths, like PHP or JavaScript, while smaller plates represent secondary skills such as API integrations or basic database management.

This setup also leverages screen size – keeping it around a standard 16:9 format – to limit space, underscoring that no developer can be an expert in everything.

For example:

• Specialists might have a couple of large plates (signifying deep knowledge in specific areas), alongside a few smaller ones for complementary skills.
• T-shaped profiles can showcase a balanced combination: broad skills with deep expertise in one or two.
